Offline Name: Anise Tatlin Age: Thirteen Canon:Tales of the Abyss Location: San Diego, CA
Original History:Her wiki page summarizes her canon history! AU History: Like in canon, Anise's family never had money when she was growing up. Her parents believed charity was a virtue first and foremost, and not only donated money often, but never pressed charges when their apartment was broken into or their wallets were stolen or when they realized there wasn't a foreign prince out there that would repay their generosity if they donated their money to help him. Because of this, Anise treasured every possession she held and was always looking towards a future where she could finally stop worrying about her family's lack of money and live the good life.
Ideally, she wants to become something of a trophy wife, and she tries to get an early start online. She sometimes tries to scope out rich guys online to potentially start a relationship with them. On top of that, she used to try to sell rare game items online for cash before that got shut down. Having only been born in 2005, many of the issues with the internet and The World seem far away from her, but she's been always avid player of The World R:2 and enjoys the game as both stress relief and a pick-me-up. She likes beating up monsters, collecting money, and getting rare items, as well as playing with her friends and completing quests with them.
Before the glitch, though, there were some issues with online life. She has an intense rivalry with another player, Arietta, and with the two of them being a part of the same guild, there was no shortage of instances where the two of them fought verbally and with their PCs. However, the glitch forced their guild to disband, and the only good thing about that for Anise is the fact that if she decided to remake the guild, Arietta wouldn't be invited.
Offline, she's a very normal thirteen year old girl. She attends public school (every day or her parents will get a phone call and she'll have to hear about it...), hangs out with her friends, and does whatever else keeps her entertained. Her life and outlook on it isn't all sunshine and rainbows, though. She's seen people robbed and be betrayed by others more than a few times. She knows there are bad people in the world and doesn't want to end up hurt or see one of her friends end up hurt. While she might not look it, she's gotten into a few fights in the past, and she doesn't mind threatening to beat someone up if she sees them or hears them talk about being scumbags.
Although she usually seems like an energetic and somewhat catty girl, one of her best friends is actually the opposite. Ion might not have been her friend since they were in diapers, but they're comfortable enough with each other that it sometimes seems like they were. In addition to that, Anise feels especially protective over Ion because of his trusting nature and lack of physical strength.
Appearance:Image, image. She'll look the same but with more appropriate clothes. She'll still be a 5' tall teenage girl with a thing for putting her hands on her hips, but she'd wear more modern clothes like cute t-shirts, shorts, and dresses.
Personality: Anise's personality remains largely the same as it was in canon. Above all else, she presents herself as a bright, energetic, and perky girl with a great fondness for money. Through the course of the canon plot, she's usually smiling and acts as the person that keeps the party on track when going from one objective to another. However, Anise is the definition of "appearances can be deceiving." Her cute, childish exterior can hide the fact that Anise is in fact a mature, dependable person who can be cruel just as easily as she can be sweet.
At times, one of the most obvious things about Anise is that she's a gold digger--or at least wants to be rich. In canon, she learned to cook well just to be a good wife, and she becomes interested in both Luke and Guy once she learns that they're aristocrats. And she's entirely transparent when it comes to showing that she's interested, from hanging off their arms to practically admitting that she just wants Luke's money under her breath. This is still there in the AU, though it's less obvious in real life (if only because she doesn't know any wealthy people) than it is online where she would be quite happy to meet a rich man that'd be interested in her, marry her in the future, and be her sugar daddy. She's not all about just marrying people for money, though. While she's definitely a get-rich-quick type, she's also interested in finding valuable items that she can sell for high prices. In the AU, she does this more than finding rich men to marry if only because it's easier to find valuable items in games than it is in real life.
While this may make Anise seem shallow and greedy, her interest in cash doesn't stem from greed. In both canon and in the AU, Anise grew up poor and her parents were often taken advantage of by scam artists. She wants money if only so she'll no longer have that fear of poverty hanging over her head. In canon, she also wanted to be rich so she could pay off her parents' debt to Mohs who was blackmailing her into betraying Ion. This does not happen the AU for her, but getting her parents out of debt wouldn't be anything she'd sneeze at.
Although she does honestly and obviously care about cash, Anise also cares about people themselves. As already mentioned, she loves her parents and works hard to protect them, but the person who occupies the number two place in her heart is Ion. Assigned to protect him in canon as his Fon Master Guardian, she grew to love him as her best friend and wanted to protect him for his kind and trusting nature as much as his physical weakness. In the AU, while she doesn't have a duty to protect Ion, she sees him in the same way: as her best friend that she's quick to defend against both physical attacks and insults. In fact, she could be considered overprotective when it comes to Ion, and in both canon and the AU, she has trouble holding back when someone is cruel towards him. While Ion is her best friend, she also looks out for all her friends to make sure they're okay and would defend them whenever possible.
Although she's protective and caring, she also enjoys teasing her friends. Just about everyone on the team gets a taste of her teasing, even (or especially) sour faces like Asch, and she has fun teasing Natalia and Luke with weird stories because she knows they're gullible. At the same time, though, she can't take what she dishes out. She gets annoyed when Jade and Ion tease her, and she falls for Jade's jokes because she think he sounds so serious.
That said, she can also be outright cruel to people. Although she's careful not to lose her temper in front of people she's trying to impress, it can be especially difficult for her to hold back her ire when Ion's involved. So rather than acting violently angry, she usually keeps her cute mask on when she's being mean and making condescending comments, calling a person names, or even telling someone they should die. Such behavior isn't her usual mode of interaction, however, and only really happens when she thinks someone has done something seriously wrong. She particularly hates scam artists (despite sometimes scamming people herself...) and people who are cruel to Ion. She's fine with getting into fights both in canon and in the AU, though fighting in canon is more acceptable - she is a part of Ion's personal guard - and she wouldn't kill someone in the AU as she would in canon because the circumstances are so different. She might still say she'd kill someone in the heat of the moment, but she never would.
Anise is a capable person in more than just the physical sense. She's able to work independently and see missions through to the end. One of the first things the party learns about Anise through Ion and Jade is that she's dependable, and for good reason: For a thirteen year old, she's able to take on a lot of responsibility and ensures that the older members of the party know what their next objective even after they're caught up seeing the forest for the trees. As Ion's Guardian, she's always ensuring that he's safe (even when she's often the cause for the danger he's put in because of her betrayal). This is a rather subtle trait as Anise does not present herself as a serious person.
Instead, she often tries to seem cute. She giggles, hangs off of people, pouts, does cute poses, and acts modest when people compliment her. Anise is usually friendly, pleasant, and cutesy. Even if she doesn't like someone, she's not nasty all the time, but if there's an opportunity presented to insult them, she'll take it. Additionally, acting cute and innocent is also convenient in getting what she wants (or at least, she thinks it is) both in canon and in the AU. She has no problem playing a damsel in distress who needs someone to protect her or pretending to be hopelessly in need of help - as long as it works out for her in the end.
Although she usually presents herself as energetic and playful and has trouble holding in her anger, the feelings she presents are not always genuine. When she's sad, Anise tends to bottle up her feelings. Rather than expressing her sorrow, she pushes herself onward as if nothing is wrong. Despite her best efforts, though, her friends can often tell when she's trying too hard to hold her feelings. When she can't hold her feelings in anymore, she still tries to and instead of expressing her grief, she channels her sadness into anger and can lash out verbally. She only truly expresses how hurt she is when she's alone with someone close to her.
The biggest changes in Anise's personality come in with her distrust of others. While she was always perfectly happy to work with people, she isn't quick to believe that people who wronged her once won't wrong her again. While she doesn't do anything to force her friends not to give such people a second chance, she still thinks they're stupid for doing so. In canon, her distrust stems from the fact that she was betraying her friends the entire time, but they all completely trusted her without a second thought. In the AU, her distrust is more a result of knowing that some people can't be trusted. She's seen her parents and other people be robbed or manipulated more than once, so she's less likely to trust people from the start.
Another deviation from canon comes in with her choice to betray her friends to save her parents. Such a thing would be unthinkable to her in the AU and choosing between her friends and her parents would be a difficult decision that she's not ready to deal with. In canon, she knew what she was getting into since she was eleven, and her parents' lives depended on her following Mohs's orders. In the AU, she's never had that blackmail hanging over her head where the lives of her parents had to be weighed against those people who she had only been introduced to in recent years.
On a similar note, Anise continues to place a premium on getting money and marrying rich. In canon, this changed as a result of Ion's death and wanting to realize his dreams for him. Nothing so dramatic has happened in the AU to change this, but it's entirely possible that she'll still give up her life's dream to be a gold digger sometime in the future. It's never been that Anise loves money so much as the fact she believes she needs it.
Overall, Anise is a very normal girl in terms of personality both in canon and in the AU. She can be catty, put on airs, and have lofty goals, but she also cares about her friends and family and will fight to defend them. Even if she might not act like a perfect angel all the time.
Other: Aside from Arietta, Ion, and Anise's parents, I'm leaving the rest of Anise's castmate relationships undefined.

PC Name: Tokunaga Race: Human. Because she thinks playing as a human would do her more favors in the long run. Class: Blade Brandier. She likes attacking and doing a lot of damage without having to worry too much about getting hurt or going too slow. Even if she has to sacrifice some attack power, it beats having fights go on forever or always worrying about dying mid-fight. On top of that, Anise likes being able to do things herself, and a balanced class like Blade Brandier means she doesn't necessarily need to team up with others. She also likes wearing light armor more than heavy armor because it shows off her character more. Having an attractive PC means guys will give you more stuff, right? Appearance: Anise's PC looks like a young adult version of her. Tokunaga has an bright and perky look, and her resting pose has her smiling and with her hand on her hip. Additionally, unlike in real life, her PC's clothing style is similar to that of her canon default outfit: a short, sleeveless dress and stockings. She also wears armored boots/shin guards, gauntlets, and sometimes a breastplate for a little bit of protection. Other: --
