You walk around the town, looking for someone to party with. Something seems a bit different, but you can't put your finger on it. Perhaps there are more people than you're used to online in the town right now. Or maybe it's the graphics, which seem to have received an update, if only a minor one... Or maybe it was the weird patch of glitching graphics by the pier and the admin standing by the area, warning off any player who tried to approach the glitched graphics. What was going on?

Before you can do anything else, you hear a beep, and a cool, automated voice. "You've got mail!" Was it from a friend? Oh, but your friend's list was wiped... You check the mail anyway, opening your menu and clicking the "Mail" option (it wasn't there before, but whoever added it is a genius!). It seems to be an e-mail from CC Corp, titled "Technical Difficulties in The World R:2".

The contents of the e-mail read:

"Dear player,

A few hours ago, we encountered technical difficulties with our systems, so we apologize to those who have been negatively affected as a result. We are currently working on restoring all lost data, but it may take several days. If you notice any issues or glitches in The World, please report it to an admin, and do not approach it. Once again, we apologize for the inconvenience and ask for your understanding and patience.

Thank you,
CyberConnect Corporation."

There was another unopened e-mail on your list. It was untitled. You open that.

It read:

"We hope you enjoy the update. You will find many new features, one of which you may be accessing right now. Along with that, we have also adde$ #%(( (--[@17# $/768 (@2222222222222222222222222

$h? 1s %n#!y. Y^0 h!ve i$#ru(e( on he6 te88it08y. B3\a83 0f M0$g@nn@."

...what? Alright, there was something fishy going on here. But whether or not the mystery would get solved was up to you. Would you pursue it and discover the truth behind The World R:2, or would you ignore it and go about your merry way? Either way, you still had to get your levels back up. And if you were one of the unlucky ones... you were stuck in here, with no way out.

Welcome to The World.

----

Revision Three is a panfandom half-AU half-jamjar game with some slice-of-life! It is based on the fictional MMO game, The World, from the .hack series, but also borrows elements from Sword Art Online and other MMO-based series. Characters are either pulled from their home into The World or are gamers who play the popular MMO. As time passes, the game begins glitching more and more, forcing characters to solve the mystery behind the glitching.

Rules

revisionmods: (Default)
Basic

Be polite
Being polite is a basic courtesy and should be followed at all times. We're all here to have fun roleplaying, after all! If you're having an issue with someone being impolite or downright rude to you, intentionally or no, try to settle it between yourselves at first. If you can't seem to fix the problem, contact a mod and we'll see what we can do.

Godmodding
One of the golden rules of RP. Godmodding is not allowed in Revision Three. If your character is in a fight with someone, or otherwise participating in an activity that requires coordination with another player, allow the other player to make choices for their own character. If you have persistent issues with a player and can't resolve it among yourselves, let a mod know and we'll try to fix the problem.

4th Walling
Given the nature of the game, 4th walling is allowed in Revision Three. However, make sure to ask the individual player that they're alright with the 4th walling, as they may have a different policy than us. For characters that regularly break the 4th wall, you may want to make a permissions post and put it in the OOC community for people to opt out of.

IC =/= OOC
IC does not equal OOC. If a character is being rude or hates your character, this does not mean the player hates you. This also extends to the things your character does. For every action your character makes there will always be a reaction from other characters, whether positive or negative.

Posting Format
Revision Three has two communities you can post in: A network community, and a log community. The format for each is below.

Network/BBS [Action, Video, Audio, Text, BBS]

[Here is the narration for an action, video or audio post. The "camera" used for these posts is easily adjustable and is not held by the character, so it can be as close or far as you want it to be, and have weird angles and whatnot. You need not write down a character's thoughts, just what they do or what can be seen from the camera. It is possible to have accidental video/audio as characters can set shortcuts to the network's functions.]

This is where the words your character actually speaks is. This includes anything not intended for the camera, or mumbling. Pretty straight forward.

Generally text and BBS posts will use a different font, like this. This is not necessary, but it makes the distinction between text and spoken words much clearer for other players. You are welcome to write with improper grammar and use emoticons and the like in text. The code for this type of text is < font face="courier" >, minus the spaces. Don't forget to add a < / font> at the end of the text if there's more to follow.

Log

Who: Put a list of the characters involved in the log. If the log is "open" this means that anyone is free to join.
When: Straightforward. The general time and date of the log's occurrence. Logs can be backdated.
Where: The location of the log's occurrence. Logs are split into two categories: online and real life, since AU characters will be allowed to meet up outside of The World.
Rating: The ratings are G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17. Anything R and above should be friend-locked. If you're unsure of the meaning of these ratings, here is a definition of each rating.
Summary: A quick explanation of what is occurring in the log. One to two sentences is enough.

(Cut to the log!)

Logs are written in prose writing, like you were reading it out of a novel. Include the character's thoughts, feelings, actions, and any other relevant thing. Make sure to write it so that those responding to the log have something to latch onto when they reply. Logs must be written in third person, past tense.

Tagging System
Due to the various types of posts you can make in this game, we'll be implementing character tags and format tags. Character tags are simple. They are written as such: "character full name". There will be several format tags for your usage. They are: !action, !audio, !video, !text, !bbs for the network, and !online, !offline for the log community. Please tag your posts with one of these tags.

Warning System
We will give you three chances. For your first and second infraction, you will receive a warning, but on your third infraction, we will remove you from the game for a month. After the month has passed, you are free to reapply into the game, but if you get three strikes again you will be banned permanently from Revision Three. But let's hope it never reaches that level, yeah?

Game Specific

Character Limit
You will be allowed to have a total of 5 characters in this game. We are also restricting players to two characters per canon, provided that the characters are mostly unrelated to each other or would not interact under any circumstances.

If you idle out of the game with a character, you will not be allowed to app that character back in for a month. After that, you are free to try again. But if idling out becomes an issue with a player, we may enforce stricter rules for that player.

OCs, CRAU, Canon AU, Canon OCs, Multiples
OCs, CRAU, Canon AU, and Canon OCs are allowed in this game. Canon OCs are essentially characters with such minor roles there is very little about them that is known. Players are welcome to apply with these characters and fill in what isn't known. The only stipulation is that this character has to have made an actual appearance in the series and was not mentioned offhandedly by a character. There are exceptions of course. If you're not sure where your character fits, feel free to ask us.

OCs are a bit of a unique situation. You are allowed to apply with an OC that has their own story and world, but you are also allowed to make a setting-specific OC, that is an OC whose background is set in Revision Three. For these OCs, we will judge their backgrounds more closely, and it is possible that you may be asked to participate in important events in the future, should you choose this route. Setting specific OCs who are jamjarred will be considered Vagrant AIs.

Multiples of a character will not be allowed in Revision Three. We only allow one version of any character to exist in Revision Three at a time. This means you cannot have Cloud from FFXII and Cloud from Kingdom Hearts in the game at the same time. There are some exceptions to this rule, for instance the various incarnations of the Doctor from Doctor Who. If you're unsure if your character falls under the category of exceptions, ask a mod.

Characters You Cannot Apply For
We have a limitation on who you can apply for in regards to characters from .hack. You may not apply for Helba, Ichiro Sato, Aura, Zefie, Azure Kite, Azure Balmung, Azure Orca, Cubia, Harald Hoerwick, and Morganna Mode Gone. All other characters are allowed.

Activity Check
Activity Check is relatively simple. It will be done once a month, at the last week of said month. Players will be required to provide two proofs out of the list of possible proofs below.
✢ A post, network or log.
✢ A network thread with at least 15 comments from your character. You may use up to three threads to meet the number requirement.
✢ A log thread with at least 10 comments from your character. You may use up to two threads to meet the number requirement.
✢ An inbox thread with at least 15 comments from your character. You may use up to three threads to meet the number requirement.
If you do not have the required proofs, you may comment on the check with a strike. Players with a strike are required to meet double AC for the next month in order to stay in the game. If players do not comment on the activity check at all, they will be removed from the game. Players who idle out this way must wait a month before applying with the same character again. If idling becomes an issue with the player, we reserve the right to refuse future applications based on that knowledge.

Hiatus and Drops
In order for a player to drop or go on hiatus, they must comment to the Hiatus and Drops page. Mentioning that you are dropping or going on hiatus in the OOC comm does not count, and will not exempt you from Activity Check in the case of a hiatus 2 weeks or longer.

During a hiatus, jamjarred characters can be assumed to have glitched out of existence for that duration. AU characters are assumed to have just not logged onto The World, and didn't reply to any message to them for that duration.

As mentioned in the first paragraph, players are exempt from a hiatus if the hiatus is 2 weeks or longer (14+ days). Any shorter than that, even by one day, will not exempt you from Activity Check.

Basic

What exactly is this game?

Revision Three is a panfandom, half-AU half-jamjar game with some slice-of-life! It is based off the popular fictional MMORPG "The World" from the .hack series, but also has elements of Sword Art Online and a touch of other MMO-based series.

Wait, half-AU, half jamjar? Can you explain that?

AU games are defined as having characters alter their canon history to fit the setting of the game. We label this game as half-AU because you get a choice between altering your character’s history to the setting, or having them pulled directly from their home into The World.

Do I need to know anything about .hack, or Sword Art Online or any sort of MMORPG?

Revision Three is based heavily on .hack, so having knowledge of the series would be a boon to you. However, for those unfamiliar with the canon, fret not. We will provide copious amounts of links and descriptions in our FAQ and in all our other information pages, so you will be able to read up on them. If you're ever confused by something, feel free to ask a mod to explain it to you.

Who can I play here?

Anyone from any canon or series, really. You can play giant robots, animals, pokemon, and other non-humanoid characters. However, they will be transformed into a more humanoid character. This question answers this more in depth. There are some limitations on who you can play from .hack. To read more, check the Rules page.

Can I bring in characters with memories from other games?

Yes, of course! You will be asked to provide a bit of history on the character's experience in that game as well as explain any personality changes the character might have underwent, but that should be standard business.

Can I apply for a canon OC, aka a character with very little canon information on them?

Definitely! If you flesh out the character in a reasonable manner, we will accept them. We only require that the character wasn't just offhandedly mentioned by characters one time or in such a manner it is impossible to tell what the minor character is like. If you are unsure where your character fits, ask a mod.

How about fandom OCs? Totally original OCs? Or what about canon AUs?

It depends. If you are just borrowing a canon's setting, then it's perfectly fine, but if they're moderately to heavily related to the main cast of that canon, probably not okay. If you're not sure where your character fits, feel free to contact us with your concerns. Completely original OCs are more than welcome to join! Canon AUs are also acceptable.

Holy... this FAQ is long. Just give me the most basic things I need to know to enjoy this game.

Alright! First and foremost, you need to know you can apply for pretty much anyone here. CR AU, OCs, canon AUs. There are two categories of players in Revision Three: AU and Jamjars. AUs are characters who've had their history modified to fit Revision Three's setting, jamjar characters were pulled from their own world into Revision Three. If you decide to go with AU, you will have to know some of .hack's history. Generally, players who join Revision Three have to choose between one of those two categories when they apply. Characters are also converted into either a human or one of three beast tribes in The World, but all are humanoid in appearance.

Revision Three takes place in The World, the popular MMORPG in the .hack series. It would be best if you knew about said series, but it's not necessary, as we will provide as many links and information as we can about it. From .hack, you need to know about the classes, some of the NPC characters and creatures, and special locations, which always start with area keywords "Hidden Forbidden". You may also want to know that Revision Three uses a leveling system and also allows for guild creation. However, players do not need to participate in guilds or worry about levels very much, as they only really exist to add more detail for those who prefer it. Most of the leveling and guild regulation will be done by mods so players don't have to. It would also be useful to know some of the in character differences between AUs and Jamjars, but we will not enforce most of these strictly.

Revision Three follows a plot (read the premise to know more about it), but will progress through it slowly, allowing players to also participate in slice-of-life activities. Each month, there will be a game-wide event, which may include plot progression or typical MMO events like tournaments, or huge quests. In addition, smaller quests will be posted for players to participate in if they so wish. Players are also welcome to run their own plots in place of mod generated events.

Characters

Can my character die?

Yes. If your character runs out of HP he or she dies and will respawn in the last Root Town they accessed. If this occurs, your character will lose 1 level of EXP as a consequence. Death is not a big issue in The World, so you do not need to check in with a mod before having your character die. But please remember to comment on the level system page for your level loss.

If your character dies in the Arena they will respawn in Lumina Cloth with no penalty.

Can my character kill another characters?

PKing (Player Killing) is a regular occurrence in MMORPGs, so you are welcome to kill other players. You need not obtain permission from a mod to kill another player. Just remember to ask the victim for permission first. Please also keep in mind that the victim will lose a level upon death, and either the victim or killer must notify the mods on the level system page.

Can my character bring their pet/companion with them upon arrival?

Unfortunately, The World does not allow players to have a pet accompany them at this moment, so the answer to that would have to be no. This may or may not change in the future, depending on what events occur in the game.

Do my characters get to keep their powers?

Nope! All characters will have their powers scaled down to what's appropriate for a Lvl. 1 character in The World, but even then, they may not be able to use them. Characters can only use their powers through the Original Skill System, and can only use the full range of their powers if it is appropriate for their class. This means mages with a Blade Brandier class may relearn some of their spells, but only low level ones.

Passive abilities can be regained in two ways. One, it can be regained as a spell or skill. However, this means the ability is subject to the rules of The World, which require all spells and skills to use up SP and have a limited length of effectiveness. The other way is to truly regain it as a passive ability using an alternate method that will be introduced in Revision Three later on.

My character is adept with computers/technology! Can they mess with The World in some way?

Not off the bat, no. If they try, they will find their attempts thwarted, and their PCs (or they themselves in the case of a jamjar character) may even be hit with consequences! However, later in the game, we may be open to such suggestions. If you wish to have your character hack The World in some way, please contact a mod so we can discuss your idea.

My character has a physical disability or illness! Do they still have it in The World?

It depends on the type of disability. If it is a disability that hinders your character's movement directly, such as paralysis or broken bones or the like, they will be removed to allow the character a full range of motion. If the disability hampers your character's movement indirectly, such as blindness, then it is up to the player's discretion as to whether or not the disability will be removed. In the case of AU characters, they may retain all their disabilities in real life. Their PCs will not have a physical disability.

All illnesses are cured upon arrival.

I heard there were different races in The World...?

You heard right. There isn't a huge variety, but there is some. There are two races, humans and beasts. Beasts are further divided into three tribes: the Ya Tribe, the Lei Tribe, and the Tu Tribe. The Ya Tribe have large, lumbering bodies, and flavour text states they have good attack and defense but are poor in magic. The Lei Tribe are shaped similar to humans, and are quick and dexterous. The Tu Tribe are small, but good with magic. All three are humanoid in shape. All players must choose one of these four types for their character's appearance in The World. If you want to know a bit more, you can read up on races here. As for AU characters, offline, your character is 100% human.

Wait, so can there be two versions of the same character where one is in AU and the other is jamjar?

As explained in the rules, we will not allow multiples of a character to exist at the same time in Revision Three. An AU Cloud could apply, and later drop, and after a jamjar Cloud could apply, but both AU and jamjar Cloud cannot be in the game at the same time. There are a couple of exceptions, such as the Doctor from Doctor Who, to name one. If you think your character falls under the exception but you're not sure, ask us.

Okay, so if someone apps in an AU version of a character, can I app in a jamjar version castmate?

Yes, this is totally acceptable! You would not have to coordinate your history with theirs either.

How much can my character interact with the environment?

This depends on whether your character is an AU or a jamjar character. AU characters will find their PCs limited much like how they would be in a video game. That means there are invisible walls preventing them from accessing unimportant alleyways, and they cannot interact with buildings and market stalls, to name a few of the limitations. Jamjar characters, on the other hand, do not have these limitations. They are free to graffiti on the buildings and flip market stalls if they like. There is more on this over at the AU vs Jamjar page. We will not be strictly enforcing this detail, so it is alright if you forget occasionally, but we hope you stick to this in general.

Can I canon update my character?

Absolutely, but only for jamjar characters. When canon updating your character, they will glitch out of existence for a day before reappearing with new memories. It will be unexplained how they obtained the new memories, so players are free to have their characters come up with a bogus theory on that.

AU characters may not canon update, simply because your character's history will probably coordinate with your castmates' or another character's histories. If your character is a lone canon warrior or has no connections at all, you may be allowed to canon update, but you will have to ask a mod first.

What happens to dropped or hiatused characters?

For jamjars, hiatused characters glitch out of The World for the length of the hiatus. When they reappear, they'll have no recollection of what happened during the glitch. They may not even be aware that they glitched out! Dropped characters are just assumed to have glitched out entirely and won't reappear (until a player applies for that character again).

For AU characters, characters on hiatus had their PC glitch out for the length of hiatus, but were promised by CC Corp through email that the issue would be fixed soon. For drops, it can be assumed for the most part that their offline player decided to stop playing and possibly deleted their character, so when someone apps an AU of the same character later on, a different offline player took the same PC name and possibly appearance for themselves. It's really a case-by-case thing and should be discussed with relevant CR and castmates.

.hack-specific

So are .hack characters appable?

Yes! Except for those listed on the rules page, all .hack characters are appable. Since Revision Three takes place in the .hack world, most R:2 characters will be considered OU and will be required to conform to Revision Three's history, but it is possible to jamjar them into this game.

Okay, so how do I conform to Revision Three's history?

It's pretty simple! You must set your character to post-G.U., as Revision Three takes place after the G.U. games. If you really wish to pull a character from a time before this, you can have them get a case of amnesia. We won't be too picky on the cause of said amnesia, as long as it's not something impossible. One possible explanation is that the glitching of The World affected their memories.

So what about R:1 characters, or R:X characters?

R:X hasn't happened as of Revision Three, so characters from that era must be AU'd or jamjarred into Revision Three. For R:1 characters, it depends on which R:2 characters have been apped into the game. See the next question for an elaboration on that.

What about Player Characters who have the same player behind them? For instance, Sora and Haseo?

This one's a bit tricky. Two players cannot play the same offline character because that makes no sense, so, using the example of Sora and Haseo, at least one of them have to be jamjarred to resolve the issue. This also includes R:2 characters who have the same offline player, like Ender and Pi.

Also, you also may not claim multiple canon PCs if your character has more than one. That means, if you were playing an OU Pi, you can't claim Ender as a second PC. This is to allow for a jamjar version of the character to appear.

Policy on Avatars/Epitaphs/Twilight Bracelet?

Unusable. Kite will have the Twilight Bracelet in possession, and characters like Haseo and Atoli will feel the Avatar within them, but they will not be able to call on their power in battle.

AU-specific

So exactly how much of the history needs to be changed for an AU character?

Only what is necessary to make the character realistic for a modern era. Revision Three takes place in the year 2018, and the world is pretty much the same as ours, plus a few differences. A timeline of the .hack series is here. For those who don't want to read through that, here's a list of important events to keep in mind.
Deadly Flash, 2003. Deadly Flash was a virus that killed several people through epileptic seizure. Its creator was the first to be sentenced to death for a cybercrime.
Pluto's Kiss, December 24, 2005. This virus shut down the whole internet for 77 minutes, and its perpetrator was a 10 year old boy in Los Angeles. After that, the internet was restricted to government and business purposes only.
ALTIMIT OS, the only operating system to survive Pluto's Kiss, is the standard OS of the world. No Windows, or MAC OS or Linux. Just ALTIMIT OS.
✢ Internet restrictions were lifted on December 24, 2007, now named Virgin's Kiss in remembrance of Pluto's Kiss, and also the day The World R:1 was released.
✢ Both The World R:1 and The World R:2 suffered issues where players would inexplicably be put into a coma while playing, though eventually most woke again, years later and all at around the same time.
It's not necessary for your characters to know this, but they might get a LOT of weird looks if they don't.

Do we need to coordinate our histories with our castmates?

The general answer is yes, but you may also change your character's history so that they have never met any of their castmates before. Minor details can be handwaved, but the major details should definitely be coordinated with your castmates.

Are we allowed to coordinate our history with characters who are from different canons?

Yes, you are allowed to do that. Be sure to let any castmate who wishes to coordinate their history with you know of the situation so there are no major inconsistencies.

Do our characters start out as having experience with the game already, or are they newbies?

That's up to you! However, all their account data has been reset so their PCs start at level 1 regardless of previous experience.

Wait, so we're allowed to have multiple "accounts"? What do you mean by that?

Much like a video game with multiple save files, MMOs don't typically restrict you to one PC. You are allowed to have up to 3 PCs for your character, but try not to create another PC unless you have a good reason. If you do want to make another PC for your character, ask a mod first.

Since our characters are playing MMOs… can we play out situations like unstable Internet connection or lag?

Of course! In general, your character's connection is very stable, but they could encounter lag or an unstable Internet connection due to the glitching of The World.

Does my character need to have a PC that looks like them?

Not at all. Your character is free to have a PC and looks nothing like them, so long as you, the player, can justify why your character would make a PC like that.

So, how does the whole real name/user name thing go down?

In our AU application, we have two sections: Offline Name and PC Name. Offline name is the name your character uses outside of The World; their "real" name, so to speak. PC Name is the name of their player character. Neither of them have to be your character's OU name, but it may be preferable to have one of the two be the OU name to lessen confusion.

Does my character need to have a class that fits them best in terms of original canon?

No, but their class choice does need to be justifiable in terms of their AU personality. That being said, we're pretty flexible about it.

Oh yeah, where does my character live in real life?

Revision Three takes place on the American server of The World, so most characters will live in San Diego, California, where CC Corp's main office is located. You are welcome to choose to have your character live elsewhere, but that may mean missing out on real life meetups for them.

Jamjar-specific

How are dead characters when they arrive?

Alive, and perfectly fine, as if nothing happened. They will remember dying, but will not retain a scar from whatever attack killed them.

Where does my character appear when they arrive?

Your character will appear by the Chaos Gate of Mac Anu, the Root Town of the Delta Server.

Does my character get a screen name when they arrive?

Your character's screen name is their full name. At the moment, it will not be changeable.

How do I choose the class for my character?

If your character acted in a combat capacity, it would be appropriate to choose whatever class most closely matches it. If not, then you may want to think of the question in terms of what class your character would choose or be if they fought. You can also give them a hilariously unfitting class if you want. Of course, sometimes you have characters with a very diverse set of abilities (e.g. the protagonists of Bravely Default), in which case you can just pick anything. The World does not necessarily know what class would fit your character best so it is really up to player discretion for the choice of class.

How did my character arrive in The World?

Good question. We're not sure either. Characters will remember engaging in a particular action in one moment, and then, after blinking, they'll find themselves in The World, much to their confusion.

Do my characters change appearance?

Your character will change to whatever race you have chosen for them. In terms of clothing, your character's clothing will change to a mix of their class's typical clothing style and their own original clothing.

What about bodily needs?

Yes, your character will still have to deal with hunger, fatigue and the like! It should not be too much of a problem though, as stalls in town will sell food and there are houses to sleep in, provided your characters have bought one.

But what if they haven't bought one?

Tough luck! Your character will have to sleep on the street. Or maybe they'll be lucky and some kind PC will let them sleep in their house.

OCs

So give me the deets on OCs.

Aight! Sit down, son, we have a bit to talk about. First of all, OCs are more than welcome in this game! There are three categories: Fandom OCs, completely original OCs, and setting-specific OCs. Fandom OCs are pretty self-explanatory, but they are only permitted if they have extremely little to no connection with the main cast of their canon. Original OCs are self-explanatory as well, and are allowed regardless of whatever.

Setting-specific OCs are a bit special. This means the OC's original canon is Revision Three itself. These OCs were created specifically for Revision Three, but we won't be letting any player create an OC that is integral to the game's plot. Setting-specific OCs will have the same abilities as regular characters in this game. Now, there are two kinds of setting specific OCs. There's the real life OC, that is, an OC that lives in real life and plays the MMO 'The World'. Then there's the Vagrant AI OC.

Vagrant AI OCs are like jamjars in that they're stuck in The World, but these OCs are actually just AIs of The World. Vagrant AI OCs will have a class and appear much like a PC character, but players who choose to take this route may be asked to participate in certain events in a unique manner later.

Setting

So what is The World exactly?

The World is a Massively Multi-player Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) that is extremely popular and is published by CyberConnect Corporation. It is the first MMORPG in the world since the Pluto's Kiss incident, and its story line is based on fictional character Emma Wielant's epic poem, the Epitaph of Twilight. The creator of The World, Harald Hoerwick, was obsessed with Emma, leading to the game's creation, along with something called the Black Box. The Black Box was a system made to create the ultimate AI, but CC Corp, not knowing of its purpose, integrated it into The World, where it later caused huge problems.

Later on, due to a massive fire at CC Corp's headquarters, almost all data from The World is lost, forcing the corporation to create The World R:2, which is the game Revision Three is based upon.

Why is this game called Revision Three then? Well, that's for you to find out.

When does this game take place?

It takes place in the year 2018, right after the events of the .hack//G.U. games. A full timeline of the .hack series is here.

What are classes? What skills can my character use?

Classes (sometimes called jobs) are the basic character types that you have to choose from. There are descriptions of each class on the Class page.

As for skills, that mostly depends on their class, although items exist that allow any character to learn certain spells (e.g. the Hellfire Scroll will let anyone learn the spell Vak Don). In this game, there are also items that teach new weapon skills, although those are class-specific. Characters may also use some of their own skills through the Original Skill System.

What is the Original Skill System?

The Original Skill System, or OSS, is one of the elements we're borrowing from Sword Art Online (although it hasn't appeared in the anime yet). The gist of it is that it lets players create new skills to add to the game. The SAO version of it relied on player skill, but The World is played with a keyboard so Revision Three's OSS uses a complex editor instead, and also requires an item to save your new skill onto. Jamjar characters are capable of converting their canon skills into OSS skills very easily, though.

What status effects are in The World?

There's quite a number of them. A list of some of them are here.

So what's the deal with the level system?

Well, this is an MMO-based game. What did you expect? Revision Three uses a level system to help players determine their character's relative strength in comparison to other characters or monsters. Levels may also be used to determine the type of quests characters can participate in, or the types of items they will receive in an event.

Levels will never be used to restrict a character from participating in game-wide events, or from all quests. It is only meant to add a bit of that MMO flavour to the game, and is very flexible depending on how much effort the player wants to put into it. For now, the level cap is 50.

Are there guilds?

Yep! Guilds exist in The World, and joining one could give your character a lot of things to do! Hell, they could even make one themselves if they wanted! To know more about guilds, check out the guild page over here.

Can I power level my character?

Certain items can increase experience gain, and partying with a player whose level is much higher than your own will result in more experience, but early into this game, no (since EXP+ items are rare and everyone's level was reset).

What is a Chaos Gate, and what are fields?

The Chaos Gate is a transportation system that allows travel from one town to another instantly, as well as from towns to fields and dungeons. Fields are very wide areas that allow for combat against monsters or other players. Each field typically has a dungeon in it, where players can enter and search for treasure.

Fields are generated by entering three keywords which determine the element and difficulty of the field. A non-inclusive list of possible keywords is here (as in, there can and probably will be keywords that aren't on this list).

So how does currency work in The World?

Basically, monsters drop money (GP) and then you can use it to buy things at NPC or guild shops. GP or items will not drop from a player that was killed.

Can my character get jobs?

The World does not support a job system besides allowing guilds to set up their own shop, but that doesn't mean your character can't have an unofficial job. They could be an escort for lower level players, or an independent merchant. Maybe even a professional victim! The limit is your imagination here.

How many people in a party, and how to invite people into a party?

In The World R:2, a party could only have a maximum of three people, but the limit on party size has doubled to 6 with the hacked update. In order to invite people into a party, first you must receive the character's Member Address. Only then can you invite the player into a party. Member Addresses also allow you to see if the player is online and contact them through private messsaging, so it is essentially like a Friends List.

Monsters! All good MMORPGs have monsters! Tell me about them!

Well, there are your typical monsters. They appear in Fields and Dungeons and walk around the field normally. Monsters have a field of vision, and if a player walks into it, they will attack the player. Here's a non-inclusive list of monsters in The World.

Dungeons, are much the same. At the bottom of the dungeon, there is a room with a Gott Statue, which has a chest that contains a rare item. Dungeons don't tend to have a boss monster of any sort, but for events or quests, this may not be the case.

Of course, there are always event-specific monsters, which can include typical monsters and a boss monster. It depends on the event.

Tell me about items and equipment too!

There are ten kinds of weapons (one for each non-Adept Rogue class), three kinds of armor (light, medium, and heavy, which are restricted to certain classes), and accessories, which anyone can equip equally. Those kinds of items all have a Level from 1-150 and a Rarity from one to five stars, and more of either tends to indicate more powerful equipment. You can also customize equipment with abilities granted by items.

As far as consumables go, there are items with roughly the same effects as most native spells (HP restores, SP restores, attack items, status cures, status inflictors, buffers, etc). A page with the a list of items is here.

Communication

Is there a sort of device characters carry for communication?

No, characters don't carry any sort of device. In order to communicate with others through video, audio or text, they must access the Network option in the menu.

How do characters access the menu?

It's relatively simple for AU characters. They just need to hit a button on their keyboard or controller to open the menu, and then they can use directional buttons to access different features. For jamjar characters, there will be a small device floating around them, visible only to them. If they touch the device, the menu will open, and they can interact with the menu like a touch screen.

Are language barriers a thing?

Nope. The World is capable of seamlessly translating from any language to any other language, including any new languages it picks up from jamjarred characters. If your character uses a special language to cast spells, that language will not be translated during the casting of the spell, even if another character uses it conversationally.

Give me a detailed explanation about the BBS.

The BBS is a forum that the players of The World use to discuss various things about the game. In Revision Three, the BBS has been merged with the Network, which is a new feature from the "update" that allows players of The World to post video or audio messages on the forum. Texts that are meant to address the whole game should be posted on the BBS. Texts addressed to small groups of people should not be posted on the BBS, as the forum does not have a filtering feature.

Is there an anon feature for any sort of post?

There's no anon feature for texting (which is really more like PMing so...), video or audio posts and comments, but there certainly is one for the BBS! This includes both the original post and any comments.

NPCs

Are there any NPCs in this game?

There are a lot of NPCs in this game. There are the NPCs that run the save/storage/quest services, there are NPCs who sell items and equipment, and there are event NPCs. Then there are NPC PCs, that is, Player Characters of The World, but they're considered NPCs in Revision Three since no player controls them.

There are also mod controlled NPC PCs who will occasionally make an appearance. The major mod controlled characters are Helba and Aura, but there are several non-major PCs controlled by the mods, who may make an appearance in the BBS with posts or comments. Players are free to interact with these PCs, they will reply. But it's unlikely your character will ever meet them off the BBS.

What are Chim Chims and why are they important?

They're cute bulbous creatures with four legs and the normal kinds are gentle and benevolent. The most important part of them something called a Chim Sphere, which sits on their head and is the Chim Chim's life source. Many devices in The World use Chim Spheres as a power source, so players often have to collect them to power mechanical doors in dungeons or warp points in fields.

In order to collect a Chim Sphere, players kick the Chim Chims to get them to drop the Chim Sphere, but that effectively kills the Chim Chim since it loses its life source. Chim Chims attempt to run away from players as a result. We have a blurb that goes into more detail about Chim Chims on our NPC page here.

Can we kill NPCs?

That depends on which NPCs you're referring to. If you are talking about the Vital Vistas in Root Towns who manage the shops and special services, well, characters can't generally attack in Root Towns, so it would be impossible. However, later on, it may become possible to attack and kill these NPCs, but it will require mod permission first.

For NPC PCs, that is, player characters who aren't controlled by any player of Revision Three, you are free to PK them and need not ask a mod.

The six mod controlled PCs that appear on the BBS will never be encountered by players physically, so you may not kill them. Aura and Helba are far too powerful and will probably kill you or stop you, so you're welcome to try but you probably won't get far.

Are there any offline NPCs?

Well, there are about 7 billion people living on Earth, so yes... but there aren't any important to Revision Three at the moment. You can't kill anyone offline unless you want your character to get arrested and thus be unable to play The World.

Are there Vagrant AI NPCs?

At the moment, they are sparse and players are unlikely to encounter them. The only Vagrant AIs players will encounter right now are OCs who have been applied for by other players.

Plots/Events

What kind of events or plots can we expect?

We have quite a number of events planned for Revision Three, both of the event/quest variety and of the plot variety. You can expect tournament events once the Arena and Lumina Cloth opens, or events where players are required to beat a strong monster for a rare item, to name a few. For plot related events, players may meet Aura or Helba, or The World may suffer from glitching that could adversely affect players.

Do you have a schedule of events?

Yes, we have a calendar of events here!

Can I run a plot of my own?

Of course! If you would like to run your own event or suggest an event for the mods to run, please make a comment over here.

Applying/Dropping

How many characters can I have?

You can have a total of five characters in Revision Three at once.

Can I apply for more than one character in the same canon?

You may only have two characters from the same canon in Revision Three at one time. Also, to prevent playercesting, these two characters must have minimal relations and/or no reason to communicate with each other.

How many applications can I send in at once?

You can only send in two applications each application period. Even if one of them gets rejected while applications are open, you many not send another application in.

Do you have a test drive?

Yes, test drives are posted in the meme community when reserves are opened.

How do reserves and applications work?

Reserves and applications are open at all times, sans moments where we may choose to close them in preparation for an overhaul or something along those lines. You may reserve your character at any time, and it will be held for two weeks. If you request an extension, your reserve will extend for one more week, but you may not request further extensions. If your reserve expires, you must wait one week before reserving the same character again.

Applications are accepted every weekend, but we may tell you earlier if your application requires revisions. You have three chances with revisions: if on the third revision you still fail to satisfy our requirements, we will reject your application, and you will have to wait a week to apply again.

Can I use samples from other games, museboxes or test drives?

Yes, you can, but make sure to choose samples that fit Revision Three's posting formats, or we may ask you to revise your sample.

I want to pick up a previously dropped character, can I?

Yes, of course! For jamjars, you need not concern yourself with previous memories, but AUs may want to consult the previous player's CR or induce amnesia on their character, or formulate a different offline character to bypass this issue entirely.

I want to re-app a character back in. Do they get to keep their memory?

Yes, they can keep their memory, but for simplicity's sake, they will lose all their levels and items from the last time they were here. You may assume they glitched and lost the data.

If I got a strike last AC, does that affect my ability to app in a new character?

You will not be able to app in a new character while you have a strike in effect. Strikes are obtained if you do not make AC in the previous month and comment on the AC to prove your interest in staying in the game. During this period, you must make double AC to remove the strike from your record. Once the strike is removed, you are allowed to apply a new character in the next application period.

Misc.

How do you handle NSFW content?

We ask that all players tag NSFW appropriately in logs, and to refrain from having their characters engage in sexual acts in the network community. We also ask that players with characters under the age of 18 refrain from having their characters engage in anything sexual at all. If you see any player breaking this rule, please report this to a mod.

How does tagging work?

Due to the various types of posts you can make in this game, we'll be implementing character tags and format tags. Character tags are simple. They are written as such: "character full name". Just tag any post your character makes, or any post your character comments on.

There will be several format tags for your usage. They are: !action, !audio, !video, !text, !bbs for the network, and !online, !real life for the log community. Please tag your posts with the appropriate tag.

Am I exempt from AC if I go on hiatus?

That depends on the length of your hiatus. You are only exempt from Activity Check if your hiatus is two weeks or longer (14+ days). If it is shorter than that, you will not be exempt from it. Also, if you entered the game this month, you are only required to meet half the normal AC requirements.

Does one IC day equal one OOC day?

The short answer is yes. The long answer is also yes, but let me elaborate. There are some MMO-based series where one in game day does not equal one real life day, for instance, Log Horizon. But for simplicity's sake in Revision Three, one OOC day = one IC Offline day = one IC MMO day.

How often is Activity Check?

Activity Check occurs once a month, at the end of the month. This is so that characters who are swept out in AC are open to be applied for in the following application period.

How is fourth walling handled?

Given the nature of the game, 4th walling is allowed in Revision Three. However, make sure to ask the individual player that they're alright with the 4th walling, as they may have a different policy than us. For characters that regularly break the 4th wall, you may want to make a permissions post and put it in the OOC community for people to opt out of.

How do I contact the mods?

Our full contact information is at the Mod Contact page, but you are also welcome to post on that page about your concerns. All comments are screened.
