Canon: Tales of Vesperia
Location: San Diego
Original History: Tales of Vesperia and Karol Capel
AU History: Since nothing is ever really mentioned about Karol’s parents in canon, in his AU history, he never knew his mother and his father passed away in an accident several years ago. This left Karol in the care of his godfather, Don Whitehorse, who is also the boss of a construction company and the former employer of Karol’s dad. Although Don is highly busy and a gruff man, Karol looks up to him and strives to please him, much like in canon.
Karol doesn't really have any solid life goals beyond "get noticed by Don" just yet. He currently attends public school, where he’s had a crush on one of his classmates, Nan, for some time. He was sometimes bullied by older kids and never really stuck in any school clubs, so Nan invited him into a club to which she belonged. However, Karol’s antics at trying to be a big shot and impress her got him once again kicked out, and she’s been ticked off with him since, as well.
In spite of this, Karol has been trying to get back on her good side. Since she was getting into the World, Karol decided to join, too. As usual, he had a tendency to be boastful and show off...but since he was clearly a newbie, he was usually written off and ignored. Whenever things didn’t go the way he wanted, Karol typically deleted his account and made a new one. He’s never had a character in the World that went above a few levels due to this.
He considered dropping the MMO, especially since he was equal parts curious and scared about the rumours surrounding the game, but then the glitch happened. Suddenly, everyone was reduced to level 1 again, and he wouldn’t stand out as a newbie anymore. He decided to give the game another go.

Karol’s appearance is mostly identical to his canon appearance. He’s a 12-year-old boy, 4’5” tall, with brown hair, large brown eyes, and an expressive face. Clothing-wise, he wears more modern outfits than in canon but still shows a clash between trying to look cool and having a liking for childish, bright colours.
Personality:Karol is very much a child. He’s earnest, emotional, energetic, boastful, scared, and ridiculous. These are some of the first things people notice about him.
His childishness may be most obvious in his tendency to come up with ridiculous names; in canon, he not only has silly attack names (“Destructo Pain Shot”!), he also tries to name his newly-formed guild “Super Ultra Courageous Braves” until Estelle gives them the improved “Brave Vesperia”, while in the R:3 AU, this would most likely be reflected in his silly usernames.
In addition to his naming patterns, Karol's age shows in his naivete. He's not totally oblivious to the darker side of life, due to his life circumstances (issues with bullying and making friends in R:3; being part of dangerous guilds in a monster-infested world in canon). He doesn't necessarily believe everything he hears, either...but he probably gets fooled by more stories than most people.
Partly because he’s childish and partly because he’s trying to get the attention of his idol (Don) and others, he acts big, trying to pretend that he’s awesome and capable of things that he isn’t. When it backfires on him or he can’t live up to the expectations that he’s tried to build for himself, he becomes scared of conflict and failure and runs away. This earns him the reputation of a coward, and although he continually reacts this way, it doesn’t mean he isn’t aware of it. He dislikes that aspect of himself and he wants to be reliable for his friends, but fears that he can’t change. This gets him caught in a cycle where his fear of failure makes him boast even more, setting him up for worse disappointment each time.
Karol is able to finally break that cycle in canon and become more confident due to a few different factors: meeting Yuri and the group, since Yuri doesn’t make fun of him for running away and gently guides him in the right direction; forming Brave Vesperia, as it helps him learn what it means to truly be a leader and allows him to develop into that role; the death of Don Whitehorse, since Karol had to recover and move on after losing his idol, allowing him to realize the ideals that he believes in rather than following someone else’s; and fighting the Baitojoh that trapped his friends, since he realized that if he really wanted to save his friends, he was the only one who could do it and he couldn’t afford to run away or back down. In this R:3 AU, these events have not happened, so he’s still trying to figure out what’s best for him. But when it comes down it, he’s an honest, hardworking, and friendly kid deep down; he just doesn’t realize yet that he can let that shine without going overboard and putting on an act, and has a tendency to latch onto anyone like an underconfident swimmer who needs a safeguard.
At those times when he’s able to simply be himself, either because of his newfound confidence or because he's around people with whom he's comfortable, he’s still full of energy--he just shows it in different ways. He likes helping people, not just to boost his reputation or “coolness factor”. He’s capable of taking care of housework and quite enjoys it; he cooks, cleans, sews, mends, and is happy to help others with those skills. He also happens to be artistic, since he’s both good at drawing pictures (there’s a canon skit where he draws detailed pictures on omelettes using ketchup) and considers mapmaking a little hobby of his. In canon, he picked up a lot of varied skills and knowledge from joining (and getting booted from) numerous guilds, while in this AU they would be a product of his mostly taking care of himself at home and of checking out a few different school clubs. These skills are where he's able to show real confidence, even early on in canon, though he still has a tendency to fret over the things he can't do.
Other: He prefers saving to spending. Oh, he’s seriously terrified of bugs.
ONLINE;
Race: Human. He wants to try and be a cooler version of himself.
Class: Edge Punisher. ICly, his reasoning would be that it’s the strongest and coolest class and gets right in on the action. OOCly, it most closely resembles his fighting style in canon.
Appearance: Karol learned early on that even if he tries to make an adult avatar, there’s no mistaking his voice. His avatar, therefore, matches his canon appearance. The differences are that he made his avatar slightly taller (about 4’8”) and will be in his Golden Soldier costume title from canon.
