OFFLINE;
Offline Name: Shinji Matou
Age: 8
Canon: Fate/EXTRA
Location: Japan

Original History: Wiki link. Additionally, according to the Fate/Extra Material Book:
The game champ of Asia. A Master who joined the Holy Grail War with the feeling that it was a game. An entitled, selfish egotist. The kid who's always annoyed because he constantly sees others as below him. He shows an immature way of speaking and acting when interacting with other people, but that is to be expected. He is actually a child who has just passed his eight birthday. The reason he made his Master avatar a sixteen year old version of himself is because he's bluffing, going "I'm no longer a child!"

In truth, his power could make him an excellent magus. To give birth to the best possible son, Shinji's mother shopped for the best possible sperm. She didn't care that her son would grow up without a father.

He fought his first round against the protagonist. A protagonist who had no reason to fight against a boy genius who thought everything was just a game. Because many Masters were like that, Shinji was only taught that the Holy Grail War was a true Game of Death with his own defeat.
AU History:
Shinji's AU history (and personality) is largely the same as canon, just without the magic. Born to a single mother, Shinji exhibited high intelligence from a young age. However, because of his mother's exacting personality, he did not receive much in the way of positive reinforcement, with her perfectionist nature bordering on emotional neglect. The result was that Shinji became socially maladjusted as he grew, both believing himself to be better than other people and desperately wanting praise from them.

With this attitude preventing him from making friends amongst his peers, Shinji turned to the internet in an attempt to receive the attention from others that he desired. It was a medium where his behavior was relatively consequence-free, complete with the added bonus of being able to misrepresent his age. By the time he had entered grade school, most of his free time was spent online, and schoolwork he was already far too smart for didn't serve to slow him down. His name—or at least his online handle—became a well-known one among online gaming circuits, both for his high-placing performance in tournaments and for the arrogant, caustic personality attached to it.

...And, "coincidently," around the same time, a freelance hacker rose to notoriety, claiming to take any job for the right price. No one has been able to produce definite proof that that hacker and Shinji are the same person, but the rumor is something of an open secret among the internet's underground.

Despite being an, um, controversial internet personality, Shinji did manage to make one...acquaintance! Shortly after he first joined the World, he attracted a heckler by chance. And, well, what did she expect him to do besides heckle back? Over time, though, the two of them somehow became partners in giving other players shit crime—most likely because Shinji refused to leave her alone when she continued to give him attention.
Appearance: An image
Personality:
A note to start: When the player first meets Shinji during the prologue, he has been given a fake set of memories just like every other participant in the Moon Cell's Holy Grail War. In his case, he assumes the role of the Shinji Matou seen in the original Fate/stay night. This seems to affect his behavior as least somewhat. For example, his behavior toward Rin is way, way more intense during the prologue than when they're seen interacting afterward. Undoubtedly, he still thinks she's a total bitch, but he's not trying to hit her for talking back to him anymore. So, uh, there's that. The fact that he's stated to actually be a good person as opposed to the original supports this assumption.

Of course, altered state of mind or not, Shinji is still a total jackass. (FUN FACT: He is literally called a "total social retard" in the game.) His dialogue is pretty much a constant stream of how much better he is than everyone else, how it's laughable that the protagonist thinks s/he can beat him, and how pathetically boring everyone is as compared to his genius. Even when he repeatedly screws up over the course of the first round, he goes into the elimination battle confident that he is going to wreck his opponent, going so far as to tell the protagonist to just forfeit so he doesn't have to waste his energy without a hint of irony. Dude has a really, really inflated sense of his own ability.

Of course, it doesn't help that he thinks of the Holy Grail War as nothing more than a video game, going so far as to make references to cutscenes and the like. He's the reigning gaming champion of Japan, so that might make his confidence...kind of understandable? In any case, he doesn't understand the stakes involved in the competition, entering just for the fame, and it comes back to bite him in the ass hard. He got into a situation way over his head because of his own lack of foresight and understanding of the consequences, and in the end he wound up paying for it with his life, the poor kid.

Because that's what he is. A kid. The Holy Grail War of Fate/EXTRA takes place in a digital environment, and the teenage body we see him with is ultimately nothing more than an online avatar. In real life, Shinji is only eight years old. Some of his behavior makes more sense when viewed through this lens; he's an obnoxious little brat, but his immaturity is totally normal for someone his age. His personality is pretty much the perfect storm of "tiny aggressive yappy dog" and "reasons why you should not let your child have unsupervised access to the internet": precocious, desperate for recognition from others, and with a vocabulary full of insults that really shouldn't come out of any eight-year-old's mouth.

Though, in fairness, he is bright for his age, which probably contributes to the aforementioned sense of superiority he has. In between more internet-influenced vernacular like "weaksauce" and "mouthbreather," he throws around words like "plebian" and "proletariat" and speaks more or less like an adult. And that's not even mentioning his hacking ability, which is apparently good enough that he can crack into top-level security files without leaving evidence behind, as well as do things like bar the protagonist from entering certain parts of the Moon Cell. Whether he is or not, he thinks himself on the level of an adult.

Another consequence of his arrogance and precocious ability is the fact that he really, really hates accepting help from other people. He seems to be of the opinion that only people who are weak and incompetent need to rely on others, and when combined with his disdain for those he sees as lesser than him, this probably means no one is going to get help from him, either. (If it benefits him, maybe, but expect him to act like he's being altruistic or something.) Overall, he's the kind of person that wants to take all the credit for things he has accomplished--and if there's no one who can even argue that they deserve some recognition as well, all the better.

Of course, despite his resistance to letting other people take credit for things, he's incredibly quick to blame them when something don't go as planned. His Servant, Rider, gets this a lot, and when she bites back, he's quick to take offense at the mere implication that his inadequacies might have contributed to their failure somehow. The fact that he's so quick to jump to the conclusion that other people are telling him he's at fault might say something about how genuine his confidence is, too, as Rider herself notes. As is often the case, his superiority complex hides a more fragile ego.

Probably not unrelated to the above is that Shinji is driven by the desire for recognition, praise, and respect. He fumes when someone older than him does what he perceives as looking down on him, and he does state that he has no interest in the actual prize of the Holy Grail War, only wanting the title. Because of his motivations, he's actually pretty easily manipulated by both praise and insults, and he can be made to drop information without much resistance if you push his buttons the right way. Basically, his need to brag and show off doesn't mix well with the Grail War's need for secrecy.

And while Shinji isn't exactly stupid, he doesn't do well under stress. When he realizes he's at a disadvantage, he becomes easily flustered, meaning that his attempts to lie around or cover up his mistakes are obvious as what they are (desperate flailing and pathetic attempts at misdirection). As the in-game week progresses, his attempts to stymie the protagonist become increasingly desperate, and considering he has all the subtly of a bullet to the face, his tricks aren't as hard to see through as he seems to think they are. Basically, he's just really bad at keeping a cool head.
Other: I apologize for all the canon references in his history, but his personality is really the same but for him not being able to lord both magical talent and high intelligence over other people.

ONLINE;
PC Name: Kirin
Race: Human. Shinji doesn't want any of that furry nonsense in his totally serious and adult gaming!!!
Class:
Adept Rogue (Macabre Dancer & Blade Brandier). Given that Shinji is the type to get uppity about being a ~REAL GAMER~, he wouldn't just accept the challenge inherent in the class of Adept Rogue—he would actively gravitate toward it for that reason. After all, any chump could master a basic class! It's not half the accomplishment that successfully maining an Adept Rogue is!!!

So yeah, he really just wants more things to hold over other people's heads, whether or not those things actually matter at all. Total asshole.

As for the primary and secondary classes, Shinji would like the versatility of the Macabre Dancer's spells. He would select it as his initial class in order to get a jumpstart on obtaining them, especially as fans being more suited to physical combat than staves and grimoires means starting as a Macabre Dancer presents less of a hurdle than the other magic classes. (Also, on a meta-level, OU Shinji acted as magical support in battle.) For his secondary class, he would want to balance his primary out with a physical one, and Blade Brandier seems the most suited to the Adept Rogue's average stats of the three available to him.

Finally, being able to switch between status magic and a plain physical class sounds like it'd be a pain for other people to deal with, and Shinji loves him some PvP.
Appearance: As Shinji is wont to do, he created his PC to resemble a teenaged version of himself. Clad in light armor, Shinji would go for a stylish and eye-catching design, but not, you know, one that looks like it's trying too hard or something, you've gotta be effortless about looking cool.
Other: Nnnnope!

another datawipe victim here.
you know, I was insanely pissed off at first. I mean, who could blame me?
after all the time I sunk into this game, it'd take more than an APOLOGY to make up for this.
but then I thought about it some more, and I realized it doesn't matter!
sitting on the top gets boring after a while, you know?
well, obviously most of YOU don't, but you get what I'm saying here, right?
if there's nowhere to go, things get dull. thinking about it like that, I was probably going to lose interest in this game soon ANYWAY.
at least this gives me something to work toward.

so, good job, I guess.
a hard reset was JUST the thing needed to keep MY patronage.
of course, that doesn't make up for the HILARIOUS incompetence involved in the mistake happening in the first place, but I'm not sure much can.
someone's getting fired, that's all I've got to say.

[Yeah, that's right, take that! He totally doesn't care!!!!]

Footsteps echoed inside the stairwell of a battered watchtower, but for as sharp as the sound was, it was also light. Certainly, these weren't steps with the weight of an adult behind them. Instead, an eight-year-old child, scrawny even for his age, stomped toward the lookout point, bounding up the steps two at a time. Shinji Matou might not have been used to so much physical activity, but he was at least tenacious.

If he wanted to figure out what to do about this situation, he knew he needed a good vantage point from which to observe it. So, when he reached the final stair, he didn't hesitate to throw open the doors to the top with all the force his tiny, atrophied arms could muster. The view might have been beautiful, but that wasn't something he cared much about. Instead, his eyes were drawn to the sky.

It looked just like any other sky—or any other sky in the real world, at least. That didn't prove of disprove much of anything, though. Even if there were a number of idiosyncrasies unique the Moon Cell, the surroundings during the prelims had looked—and felt—no different than the outside world. If there was one compliment Shinji had for it, it was the Moon Cell's ability to create strikingly realistic stimuli. He could still remember the feeling of his limbs blackening and fading away...

"Heh—hahaha..."

Right. His "death." He had been so scared, but in the end, it must have been some big joke. After all, he was standing here alive, wasn't he? He wished Rider were here so he could laugh in her face about how wrong she had been, but he supposed she really must have been deleted forever. For a split second, the thought almost made him sad.

Well, whatever. He dug into the pockets of his pants and pulled out what had been stashed there: a pack of twinkies he had snatched from one of the stores he had passed, and the strange "watch" he had found upon his arrival. Tearing open the former with his teeth, he took a hearty bite as he flipped open the communicator and began to fiddle with it. For someone like him, figuring this out would be no problem at all...
